ImPACT Testing

ImPACT Testing

At Susquenita School District, the health and safety of our athletes has always been our top priority.

This year Susquenita School District will be utilizing a software program to assess head injuries called ImPACT.  This program tests all athletes pre-season and obtains a baseline measurement of neuro-cognitive function.  During the season if an athlete has a suspected head injury, he/she will be retested and the result is compared to the original baseline measurement.  The athletes score on the ImPACT test is only one of many criteria that we will look at for safe return to sport.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

What is ImPACT?

ImPACT (Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing), is a software tool which was developed by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).  ImPACT is used in many professional, collegiate, and high school sports programs across the country to successfully diagnose and manage concussions.  If an athlete is believed to have suffered a head injury, ImPACT can be used to help determine the severity, and monitor the healing process and assist in safe return to play.

How Does ImPACT Work?

All Susquenita Junior High and High School athletes who participate in a PIAA recognized sport will take a 30 minute computerized test that measures brain processing, speed, memory and visual motor skills.  The ImPACT testing procedures are non-invasive and pose no risks to your son/daughter.  The results will be collected and stored by our Athletic Trainer.  If an athlete experiences a head injury or concussion during the season, he / she is re-tested and the result is compared to the baseline data.

How Does an Athlete Take the ImPACT Test?

Prior to any student participating in practices, inter-school practices, scrimmages and / or games the student is required to complete Impact Testing.

Impact testing will be completed prior to each season.  Students are responsible for completing their testing prior to the season.  Athletes that complete baseline testing in the fall season will NOT need to complete a new baseline test prior to Winter / Spring Seasons.
